The building has all the glamour of an insurance office.

In fact, the room looks more like a high school computer lab than a studio where the Bay Area's top high school sports show is crafted each week during the school year.

Still, magic happens there weekly from September to June. Out of their humble surroundings on the second floor of a dark, dreary Santa Clara office building, Robert Braunstein and his Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area crew deliver quality programs that focus on the athletic achievements of area young people.

A crew of six mans the cameras each week, covering everything from high school football and water polo to field hockey and volleyball. They then return to the seven computers that are networked together in their "studio," where each week a new show is born.

"Everybody shoots, edits and writes," says Braunstein of his Cal-Hi crew that includes supervising producer Dan Harris, co-anchor Theresa Viñal, Marissa Lovus, Joey DeStefano and Kevin Gahl. "Organization is the key for us to get everything done."

Braunstein should know. This fall he begins his 10th season with Cal-Hi after 10 years as the host of High School Sports Focus.

"Football is by far our most intense season of all because everything happens on Friday night," says Braunstein. "We'll shoot 17 or 18 games a week--10 football games and a variety of other sports."

Braunstein pioneered the concept of a high school sports show when he introduced High School Sports Focus on KICU-Channel 36 to a Bay Area audience back in 1991. He went out on his own in 2001 and now produces Cal-Hi Sports.
